It’s been more than two months since I decided to start jogging. Today I completed week 6 of the Couch to 5K program:
Day 1 of week six of the Couch to 5k program has three running intervals of 5, 8 and 5 minutes respectively separated by 3 minute walks.
After the horrors off running for 20 straight minutes, running for 8 minutes was a relief. It was far less taxing than I had imagined.
Day 2 of Week 6 is simply a warm up walk and two ten minute runs spaced by a walking period of three minutes.
The third and last day of Week 6 scared the wits out of me, despite last week’s promise not to be mentally defeated. I couldn’t imagine running for 25 minutes. I actually postponed it by a day.
But today I woke up determined, put on my running shoes and hit the road.
By the time the Couch to 5K app told me “Halfway” I was exhausted. Still I ran on, reasoning that running for less than the 20 minutes I did last week would be retrogressive. I did one step at a time until unbelievably I heard “Cool Down”. I felt like I could have done a minute more.
I have to say I still don’t like running but I think jogging was one of my better ideas. I’m now fitter than I’ve been in a long time and I think there are other indirect benefits as well.
Week 7 here I come.
